Reflux Recommendations
We discussed the nature of GERD and I have suggested several specific recommendations. I am encouraging you to avoid:
- bending, straining and heavy lifting; tight or constricting clothing around the abdomen or waist
- spicy foods, such as pizza, chili, lasagna, etc
- greasy foods, such as the skin of chicken, gravy, fries, donuts, etc
- acidic or gas-producing foods, such as tomatoes, cabbage, onions, etc
- avoid caffeine, tobacco and alcohol
- avoid eating or drinking 3 hours prior to laying down to sleep
- elevation of the head of the bed 6 inches using wooden blocks or books
I am also encouraging the use of an over-the-counter antacid to be used before bedtime (Tums® or Rolaids®, Maalox® or Mylanta®)
