Reflux Recommendations

We discussed the nature of GERD and I have suggested several specific recommendations.  I am encouraging you to avoid:

  1. bending, straining and heavy lifting; tight or constricting clothing around the abdomen or waist
  2. spicy foods, such as pizza, chili, lasagna, etc…
  3. greasy foods, such as the skin of chicken, gravy, fries, donuts, etc…
  4. acidic or gas-producing foods, such as tomatoes, cabbage, onions, etc…
  5. avoid caffeine, tobacco and alcohol
  6. avoid eating or drinking 3 hours prior to laying down to sleep
  7. elevation of the head of the bed 6 inches using wooden blocks or books

I am also encouraging the use of an over-the-counter antacid to be used before bedtime (Tums® or Rolaids®, Maalox® or Mylanta®)
